The Edith Experiment: Avoiding Illness on a Plane

Before heading to Mexico for a friend’s wedding, I had a conversation with my grandma Edith. With the recent concern about Ebola she has heard a lot of travel tips on the news and friends lately. People are very aware of the germs on a plane and often complain about getting sick after a trip. I decided to try grandma’s suggestions while on our trip.

Hypothesis:
Using antibacterial products during flight will prevent you from contracting bacterial illness from breathing recirculated air or touching infected surfaces.
As all of the people traveling with me were concerned about germs, we all participated in the experiment.

Material:
1. Qtips
2. Antibacterial ointment
3. Antibacterial hand wipes

Procedure:
1. Prior to heading to the airport apply a drop of antibacterial ointment to a Qtip and rub around the inside of your nostril. Repeat in other nostril.

2. As you enter the plane get ready with the antibacterial wipes. Use them to wipe down everything you will come in contact with at your seat: arm rests, TV, tray table, seat belt, overhead light and vent, etc.

Observation:
1. It was difficult to determine whether or not I was applying the antibacterial ointment or cleaning out boogers. I could not feel the ointment.
2. People around us on the plane were quick to join in when offered a wipe for their area.
3. I did not get sick after flying to Mexico, (other than a little mexi-trots from dirty street meat).
4. I did not get sick after flying back to Canada.

Conclusion:
1. The Edith Experiment brought the issue of germs on planes front of mind. People involved or observing the experiment were very intrigued and thought it was a good idea.
2. I can not conclude 100% that the antibacterial products I used contributed to a healthy germ free environment on the plane, but I’m sure it helped.
3. Conducting the experiment gave me peace of mind while on the plane, and therefore; I will be adding these steps to my future air travel routine.

I encourage anyone who travels by air to try the Edith Experiment.

  1. I am the proud packer of handi-wipes and the Immune mist from Sage that I spray on myself in the airport and plane. Having recently picked up a norovirus from the airport or plane two months ago and subsequently lost 6 pounds in its ravaging, I’m with Edith on the cleaning habits!
