Today I find myself trapped under a sick baby. No she doesn’t have me pinned like Dwayne Johnson during his time as “the Rock”. More like in the movie Ghostbusters when the librarian (in this case me) reluctantly gets slimed by a ghost (in this case sick baby). As every mom knows there are times when you have to bare down and sit for hours on end while your child is draped over you sleeping and oozing. Today is one of those days.
I always have a hard time dealing with being trapped, so other than playing games on my phone I like to do research. This is likely something I get from my dad as he is known for his researching abilities. He is a self proclaimed expert on anything he can google.
The flavour of the day this week is camping with a baby. Or rather glamping for those of you that are hard core and believe a tent trailer no longer says “camping”. We have decided that this weekend is the weekend we are trying it out. I have read a lot of blogs and posts, and hounded my friends. So without experience and just a little common sense, here is my take on the good advice.
- Sunscreen – For babies it is recommended to use mineral based sunscreen that have less harmful chemicals. It’s important to have full spectrum protection (UVA/UVB). A higher spf does not necessarily mean better as more chemicals are added so it last longer. An spf of 30 – 50 reapplied frequently is what is recommended according to what I have read. Aveeno and Coppertone both have mineral sunscreens, but I’m going to try the Honest Company because I know what all the ingredients are.
- Bug Deterrent – There are a few different ways to protect babies from bug bites. First of all cover their bodies as much as possible. For those warm days it is a good option to purchase a mesh tent for the babies to sit in while at camp. You may want to also avoid activities in the morning and at dusk when the bugs (flies) are bad out. If these options of protection are not available to you, it’s time to pull out the spray or cream. There are several options which do not contain deet, but if they don’t work be sure to stay under 10% deet. For babies as with everything read the bottle to make sure it is safe for infants. I am going to pack both a deet and non-deet option for this trip.
- Clothing – Double everything. Getting dirty is inevitable so be prepared for lots of changes. Also pack several layers to adjust to changing temperature. Don’t skimp out.
- Diapers and Wipes – Again bring double. Do not risk running out. It’s better to have a full trunk of diapers than be one short.
- Feeding – Bring alternatives to your usual method. You may find that the outdoors are distracting or engaging. Be prepared to change it up a little to accommodate the change in scenery.
- Toys – Bring familiar toys so you don’t have to encourage play while you are trying to cook dinner. Also bring extra chew toys as they will all go in the dirt at some point.
- First Aid Kit – It’s easiest to buy a premade kit and add baby specific stuff like baby Tylenol and thermometer.
Well wish us luck!I hope my research pays off this weekend! If you have additional tips I would love to hear them! Happy camping!
